Position: Professor of Biocontrol

Professor Butt has over 28 years experience in invertebrate pathology and biological control and leads the Biocontrol and Natural Products (BANP) group on this matter at Swansea University. Tariq has managed over 30 national, international and EU projects and has published extensively in high ranking journals and has edited two books. Tariq has two inventions for which patent applications have been filed.

He has developed insect pathogenic fungi for the control of arthropod pests of socio-economic importance including crop pests (e.g. weevils, aphids and thrips) and vectors of human and animal diseases (e.g. mosquitoes, midges and ticks). Tariq has worked with industry and regulators in resolving commercial (product development) and regulatory issues.


Fungal BCA development (production, formulation, application, risk assessment, registration). Fungal ecology and pathogenensis (he is particularly interested in exploiting synergies between entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) and benign efficacy enhancing agents). "Lure and kill" and "stress and kill" pest control strategies.
